As an artist and a creative individual I am constantly in awe, and a bit overwhelmed, at the constant flow of information that is out there. So to make things a bit easier I have compiled several list to help you with your creative endeavors. In these lists you will find everything from helpful books, inspiring art, informative articles, to creative podcasts and local/national programs that help artists.
Books That I Recommend:
The War on Art: Break through Art Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battle - Steven Pressfield
A hard nosed pep talk in book form, what's not to love.
I absolutely love this book. It's incredibly useful and doesn't have a lot of fluff that is commonly found in similar books. James Gurney has done extensive research into how light and color work in the real world and how it applies to art. He balances the scientific understanding with artistic flare in the most eloquent way possible. It is an incredible book, worthy of both your time and your money.
James Gurney is a accomplished painter and an equally brilliant teacher. This book is great for artists of all types, it is written clearly and to the point. In the introduction of the book he states:
"This is not a book about figure drawing, anatomy, or perspective. It's not a step-by-step guide on how to draw dinosaurs. It's also not a recipe book for a particular paint technique, although all these topics are addressed in passing. What this book contains is a distillation of the time-tested methods that I've found to be most helpful for achieving realism in imaginative pictures."
And that is exactly what it is, principles for magnificent imaginative art and illustration.
